Sounds

Beirut, Lebanon

It’s almost midnight,
and the city holds its breath,
awaiting an unnecessarily generous helping of cruelty,
delivered indiscriminately to rooftops and olive fields.

People haven’t had a good sleep in days,
night comes and everyone hopes those far away have been brought to their senses,
nothing has been stopping them,
but maybe today, their conscious would.

Some give in to sleep,
the tiredness of their bodies finally winning the battle against all odds,
it’s 2AM,
and the ‘package’ finally comes,
or rather several,
each causing a loud thud, shaking souls from their sleep and windows alike.

No one can stop them still, apparently,
No condemnation strong enough,
No statement heavy-worded enough,
No court order legitimate enough,
No scream loud enough,
No conscious powerful enough…

It’s 7 in the morning,
and no one in the city has gotten enough sleep,
coffee is served and cigarettes smoked,
the chipping of birds is overcome by the sound of devices meant to capture their every move…

Some pretend not to notice it all,
some linger on the streets without a home,
and some not willing to budge, regardless of how many packages they receive.

One thing is true,
no one has been left unscathed…

One thing is true,
We shall all look back and properly grieve our collective humanity that we put aside just so that we can let the days pass.
